Re-Enable Omnibox Protocol and Subdomain

How to Re-Enable the Protocol and Subdomain in the new Google Chrome

Recently Google release Chrome version 69 which consists of Google's new Material Refresh UI.

Although the new UI and features are really nice there are a few changes that might seem rather annoying. With the many changes that landed in this release one particular feature to point out is the new Omnibox, formally known as the search bar or address bar. Google's attempt to make the search bar more dynamic and intelligent may catch some by surprise.

I have provided a list of instructions below for re-enabling the protocol and domain for the omnibox.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to chrome://flags
  2. Search for Omnibox UI Hide Steady-State URL Scheme and Trivial Subdomains
  3. Switch the Toggle from Enabled / Default to Disabled.
  4. Reload Chrome.
  5. Enjoy !

For a simplified version of the instructions above simply copy and paste this url into the new omnibox (search bar)

chrome://flags/#omnibox-ui-hide-steady-state-url-scheme-and-subdomains
